MLS CUP PLAYOFFS GAME NOTES: New England Revolution vs. Chicago Fire
2009 Eastern Conference Semifinal Series: Game 1
Sunday, November 1 - 2 p.m.
Gillette Stadium (Foxborough, Mass.)
TV: Fox Soccer Channel
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - For the fifth straight year, the New England Revolution and Chicago Fire will meet in the MLS Cup Playoffs, beginning with Game 1 of an Eastern Conference Semifinal Series on Sunday, Nov. 1, at Gillette Stadium. The game will be televised nationally on Fox Soccer Channel, with pregame coverage beginning at 1:30 p.m. and kickoff set for 2 p.m. Local radio listeners can listen to the call on WRKO 680 AM.
Arguably Major League Soccer's most heated rivals, the Revs (11-10-9, 42 pts.) and Fire (11-7-12, 45 pts.) will be meeting in the postseason for the seventh time in the last eight seasons and the eighth time overall. New England owns a slight edge in overall playoff series victories, having advanced past Chicago four times in the previous seven encounters, including three straight years from 2005-07 on the way to the MLS Cup Final. That string was snapped last season, however, when the Fire defeated the Revs in a 2008 Eastern Conference Semifinal Series.
If the 2009 regular-season series is any indication, this year's playoff encounter is sure to be another classic. The teams played to a pair of hard-fought draws, including a 1-1 stalemate at Toyota Park on May 9, and a 0-0 draw just two weeks ago on Oct. 17 at Gillette Stadium. New England and Chicago also met in the semifinal round of SuperLiga 2009, with the Fire earning a 2-1 win in Foxborough en route to the competition's title match.
The decisive Game 2 of this season's Eastern Conference Semifinal Series will take place at Chicago's Toyota Park on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 8:30 p.m. ET.
